Frequently Asked Questions

Q.

Do Christian colleges have distance education programs?

A.

Many of the CCCU members offer some distance education; some have complete programs. For most students, a combination of on-site classes along with distance learning provides more interaction for a better experience.

Q.

How much academic freedom is there on a Christian campus?

A.

Honestly, it varies, but generally academic freedom is alive and well on Christian campuses. Students at Christian colleges are not required to agree to specific belief codes like the faculty are. Indeed, most (but not all) Christian colleges admit students who are not Christians. Generally, students have wide academic freedom because the purpose of a college education is recognized to be developing and shaping your beliefs and commitments, not indoctrination.

Q.

How much homework will I have outside of class?

A.

Your amount of homework will depend on what classes you have, who your professors are, what college you attend and your personal study habits. Typically, you spend two to three hours studying for each credit hour. For example, you would spend three hours in class each week attending a three-hour class, and you would have about six to nine hours of outside homework or studying. For graduate students, you would double the amount of credits you're taking, keeping in mind that you take less credits per semester.

Q.

How will college classes be different from high school classes?

A.

Some college classes have mostly lectures. Others have a hands-on style of learning. Some classes will have many people, and some will have only a few. The main differences will be an increase in the amount of information covered each semester, which means more reading and testing. Another change may be having only a few assignments for the entire semester.

Q.

Are multicultural students represented on Christian campuses?

A.

Multicultural students are present and welcome at all CCCU colleges and universities. Campuses vary in the number and percentage of multicultural students, but all seek to enroll increasing numbers of students representing a broad range of diversity on the campus. As schools become more diverse, so do the services to specifically serve these students. Each campus will have its own approach to these matters, but all seek to reflect the breadth of the kingdom of God in its student body and faculty as faithfully as possible.

Q.

Are non-Christians ever accepted into Christian colleges?

A.

Many Christian colleges will allow a non-believer to attend if they agree to live by the rules of the campus community. While a vast majority of students at Christian colleges profess to be Christians, it is also important to have some evangelical outreach and accountability on campus to non-believers. These non-Christian students are often drawn to Christian colleges by the friendly environment, a particular major, the geographic location or an athletic program. And even the students who enter a Christian college as professing Christians are all at different points in their faith.

Q.

Are there many rules at Christian colleges and universities?

A.

Christian colleges and universities work very hard to build a genuine sense of Christian community that will both strengthen and enhance the overall learning environment. So, yes Christian colleges and universities generally do have more standards then do secular counterparts; the number and nature of theses standards vary from institution to institution. The key is to look closely at those rules when you are considering which college to pursue and then determine what is unique about the Christian character of the place and how it contributes to the learning environment.

Q.

Is chapel attendance required?

A.

Many colleges in the CCCU require chapel attendance. Services offer students a time of personal reflection about themselves, others are evangelistic in nature, while others focus on a student's development of a Christian worldview. No matter the number required, chapel services are offered to help develop the student from a spiritual standpoint and should be viewed as an integral part of a Christian-based education.

Q.

Are there opportunities for mission trips?

A.

Christian colleges offer a number of mission opportunities. Most colleges send students on service projects over spring or summer breaks to sites in North America and around the world. These opportunities vary from urban ministries and street evangelism to prison ministry and construction projects. Local efforts can include serving at a soup kitchen, volunteering at the county jail, building a Habitat for Humanity house, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, helping immigrants learn English and cleaning homeless shelters.
